Application: Furniture
Customer value drivers: Rigidity, weight and cost
Accomplishment:
Elytra participated in the development of a range of stainless steel furniture with ArcelorMittal Total Offer Processing based on its Elylite Stainless technology.
Replacing shelves out of profiled stainless steel plate with a thickness of 3 mm ferritic grade stainless steel by an Elytra sandwich material allows to arrive at a 'slim' design rack, with a superior stiffness and thus reduced bending of the shelves in use. The introduction of sandwich panels in this application allows a reduction of the weight of the shelves by 68% while reducing the cost at the same time by 18%.
In one other case shelves consisting of 6 mm aluminum were replaced with a stainless steel sandwich based on Elytra's Elylite Stainless technology. The weight of the shelves was reduced from 16.2 kg/mē to 8.7 kg/mē, a reduction by 46%, at a comparable cost level.
Testimonial:
"The use of sandwich technology in the manufacturing of steel furniture was completely new to us when we started the devolpment work with Elytra. Very quickly the added value of sandwich materials in terms of rigidity and weigh became clear to us. When working with stainless steel we even saw the potential of a significant cost benefit when replacing thick sheet material. The challenges we faced on edge finishing and the introduction of attachment points in the sandwich material were resolved in close cooperation with Elytra. If we may believe one of the biggest furniture manufacturers in the world, we are just at the beginning of the use of a new generation (materials and technology) of sandwich panels in (steel) furniture applications."
